20 VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED. We are looking for drivers with recent clear DBS checks to deliver prescriptions to (a) the overs 60s and (b) anyone of any age with underlying medical conditions who qualifies for free prescriptions and is isolating.
WHAT SPARKED THIS?
A practice nurse from the health & wellbeing centre contacted ILR yesterday to report that patients can't get their prescriptions because some local prescription delivery services are already full.
WHAT DO PHARMACISTS SAY?
I spoke with a pharmacist in Royton today and the situation is not good. Many staff are off sick, demand for home deliveries of prescriptions is increasing and customers are queuing up outside for 30 minutes or more as only 1 customer is allowed inside at a time. If any staff member within a pharmacy gets the virus the whole staff team would have to isolate and the pharmacy would have to close.
The pharmacist suggested that we build a list of local volunteer drivers and share this list with Royton's 3 pharmacies to enable them to offer free home delivery. The pharmacy would choose a driver from the list then call the customer to get permission to release the prescription to the driver. Easy as that.
This will help all of Royton's vulnerable residents to stay home in isolation well away from the virus. The prescription would have to be very carefully delivered using full precautions and the resident should understand that they must properly wipe down the packaging and then wash their hands.
WHY IS IT ONLY FOR FREE PRESCRIPTIONS?
You'll notice that I've only mentioned people aged 60. That's because prescriptions are free for the over 60s. If we arrange delivery for the under 60s then we have to start worrying about paying for the prescription and getting refunded by customers. That would need some careful thought so, for now, we are just offering this service to people who don't pay for their prescriptions.
WHY 20 DRIVERS?
So that the chemists have enough people to choose from without swamping the same driver every time. I am closing the form after 20 entries and will re-open it again in future if the need arises.
If this first phase is successful then we will expand to customers who pay for their prescriptions and might need to ask again for more volunteer drivers.
HOW DO I VOLUNTEER?
Please enter your details using this form but remember you will need a recent DBS pass. If you complete the form please PM a photo of your DBS to ILR
This might not work but it seems like we have to try. The idea might need to be tweaked or scrapped depending on feedback from customers and pharmacists.
